According to the news on May 17, at the ICDE 2024, the international top-level database academic conference held in the Netherlands, Alibaba Cloud won the Industry and Applications Track Best Paper Award. Alibaba Cloud PolarDB solves the major problem of cross-machine transaction migration in serverless databases. It reduces the cross-machine migration time to less than 0.5 seconds and improves the overall performance by dozens of times. A total of 5 papers from Alibaba Cloud were accepted by the ICDE 2024 this year.
ICDE (International Conference on Data Engineering), VLDB (Very Large Data Bases), and SIGMOD (Special Interest Group on Management of Data) are recognized as the three top-level academic conferences in the international data management field. The ICDE 2024 conference held in the Netherlands attracted nearly 1,000 participants to discuss cutting-edge technical issues in the fields of AI, databases, and data processing.
In recent years, with the in-depth implementation of serverless technology in the database field, many databases face the challenge of cross-machine instance migration and read expansion. The industry has also tried many solutions to achieve cross-machine migration and expansion without interruption to businesses. Based on the high-performance cloud-native database PolarDB with globally consistent reads, the Alibaba Cloud database team designed an efficient transaction migration mechanism to implement cross-server transaction migration in only 0.5 seconds in the experimental scenario.
The Alibaba Cloud team completed this work independently and accumulated large-scale practices with more than 10,000 customers on Alibaba Cloud through PolarDB. Based on this, the Alibaba Cloud paper "Towards a Shared-storage-based Serverless Database Achieving Seamless Scale-up and Read Scale-out" won the ICDE 2024 Industry and Applications Track "Best Paper Award". ICDE review experts commented that Alibaba Cloud's achievements, selected from more than 100 excellent papers on the track, are benchmarks of theoretical innovation and application in industrial practices.
The Alibaba Cloud database remains innovative and has made great achievements in cutting-edge technologies such as 8cloud-native, intelligence, HTAP, and security and trusted services. Previously, the paper on a new method of database bug detection, jointly written by Alibaba Cloud and Zhejiang University, won the SIGMOD 2023 Best Paper Award. This is the first time in the history of SIGMOD that a Chinese mainland research team has won the Best Paper Award. Up to now, Alibaba has more than 120 papers related to the database which have been accepted in international top-level conferences and journals.
The Alibaba Cloud PolarDB has achieved 400% growth in the past three years, with more than 10,000 users. It is widely used in core business systems in government affairs, finance, telecommunications, logistics, and the Internet.
