Alibaba Partners with Shanghai Municipal Government to Develop Yangtze River Delta Region

This article gives an overview of how Alibaba and Ant Financial will work together to transform Shanghai into the most technologically advanced and globalized city in the world.

Alibaba Group and the city of Shanghai reached a strategic cooperation agreement to promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and foster technological innovation in the region. Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee, Li Qiang met Jack Ma, the Executive Chairman at Alibaba, while Shanghai Mayor, Ying Yong, and Jack Ma witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement. According to the agreement, Alibaba Cloud will provide cloud computing technology to assist with creating a benchmark for megacity governance.

The agreement will help Alibaba in optimizing its industrial layout in Shanghai and innovating its application scenarios. Everyone hopes that the parties can better utilize their respective advantages by signing the strategic cooperation agreement and achieve significant development in the future.

Alibaba will pledge its R&D capabilities for Shanghai to take advantage of its cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and power local retail, smart logistics, and environmental governance for a new era in the Yangtze River Delta's economy. Ant Financial, with its expertise in blockchain, mobile payment, and data interaction will help Shanghai to develop as an international financial center.

Currently, Alibaba has more than 9000 employees in Shanghai. Every week, over 60 shuttles are used to transport employees to and fro Shanghai and Hangzhou. Alibaba's development is rooted in the Yangtze River Delta. As Alibaba sees great potential in Shanghai's future development, it will continue to put forth more business, new technology, products and models in the region.

Moreover, Alibaba assisted the inaugural China International Import Expo in implementing it's "6 + 365 day" one-stop exhibition and trading services platform to create an "always-online" digital conference. A critical cooperative point is accelerating the arrival of new retail ecosystems such as Hema Fresh and Intime Retail, and ensuring that Shanghai steps forward as the benchmark for new retail, not only in China but also around the world.

Shanghai tops other cities in terms of population, total economic volume, and total metro length as a megacity and a member of over 600 cities in China. Additionally, Shanghai is home to more skyscrapers than any location on the planet. As a leading provider of business infrastructure, Alibaba will use its expertise in digital technology to further enhance Shanghai's service and manufacturing industries thereby helping the city to be a globalized.

Shanghai will explore cloud computing to set a global benchmark for a megacity streamlined by smart technology. Alibaba Cloud will work with the Shanghai government to cooperate in numerous fields such as smart government, industry internet platforms, social governance, and traffic management.

Alibaba Cloud has hosted many technology conferences and events in Shanghai over the years, including The Computing Conference Shanghai Summit, the Tianchi Big Data contest, and the Create @ Alibaba Cloud Startup Contest. These events help bring the most refreshing ideas, the most cutting-edge digital technology, and the latest application scenarios to Shanghai.

As of late, some Shanghai Metro stations have started to utilize a smart ticket vending system, powered by Alibaba Cloud's voice recognition technology. All the new cars manufactured by SAIC Motors and its subsidiaries, including the Roewe, MG, and Maxus brands, already installed on 700,000 vehicles carry Banma Network Technology's AliOS.
