Elastic Desktop Service:Maintain cloud computers

Last Updated:Aug 10, 2024

If you need to maintain a cloud computer and do not want end users to connect to and use the cloud computer during maintenance, you can put the cloud computer into maintenance mode. This topic describes how to maintain cloud computers in Elastic Desktop Service (EDS).

Background information

To install or uninstall configuration files or applications and manage the configurations of the system disk on a cloud computer, you must first put the cloud computer into maintenance mode.

Scenarios

  • If you want to maintain a pooled cloud computer, which is a computer in a cloud computer pool, and do not want end users to connect to and use the cloud computer during maintenance, you can put the cloud computer into maintenance mode. For example, you can create images for the cloud computer pool during maintenance. After the pooled cloud computer is put into maintenance mode, end users cannot connect to the pooled cloud computer from the EDS terminal. However, you can maintain the pooled cloud computer in the EDS console.

  • If you want to maintain a dedicated cloud computer that is independently created and do not want end users to connect to and use the cloud computer during the maintenance, you can use one of the following methods:

    • Revoke permissions on the cloud computer from end users. For more information, see the Assign cloud computers or cloud computer pools section of the "Manage convenience accounts" topic.

If you want to authorize end users to reuse the cloud computer, you need to assign the cloud computer again.

    • Lock the convenience account that end users use to log on to the EDS terminal. For more information, see the Lock or unlock convenience accounts section of the "Manage convenience accounts" topic.

      Important

After a convenience account is locked, end users cannot use the convenience account to log on to the EDS terminal. Therefore, end users cannot use any cloud computers.

    • Put the cloud computer into maintenance mode. For more information, see the Put a dedicated cloud computer into maintenance mode section of this topic.

      Note

If you put a dedicated cloud computer into maintenance mode, both the administrator and end users cannot connect to and use the dedicated cloud computer.

After the dedicated cloud computer exists maintenance mode, end users can use the dedicated cloud computer again.

Usage notes

Before you put a cloud computer into maintenance mode, take note of the following items:

  • If you put a cloud computer that is not assigned to end users into maintenance mode, you cannot click View/Assign Users or Manage User MFA Device in the Actions column of the cloud computer.

  • If you put a cloud computer that is assigned to end users into maintenance mode, the cloud computer enters the Under Maintenance state as soon as all end users disconnect from the cloud computer. End users cannot reconnect to the cloud computer until the cloud computer exits maintenance mode.

  • If you put a pooled cloud computer that is assigned to end users into maintenance mode, the cloud computer enters the Under Maintenance state only after all sessions of the cloud computer are disconnected. The pooled cloud computer in maintenance mode is temporarily unavailable for assignment. When an end user requests a cloud computer, the system checks whether idle cloud computers exist based on the cloud computer scaling rules that you configured. If idle cloud computers exist, the system randomly assigns one of the idle cloud computers to the end user.

  • The system records the maintenance operations on a cloud computer that is in the Under Maintenance state. You can view operation logs after the required system policy is attached to your Alibaba Cloud account. For more information, see Attach an Elastic Desktop Service system policy to a RAM user or View operation logs.

Prerequisites

  • The cloud computer is in the Stopped or Running state.

  • If you want to use a Resource Access Management (RAM) user to maintain the cloud computer, the required permissions are granted to the RAM user. For more information, see Grant permissions to a RAM user.

Put a pooled cloud computer into maintenance mode
