Elastic Desktop Service:Change the PL of an ESSD

Last Updated:Oct 15, 2024

When you create a cloud computer in Elastic Desktop Service (EDS), you can use a cloud computer template to specify the specifications that meet your business requirements. By default, cloud computers of the Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency type use enterprise SSDs (ESSDs). You can specify the disk capacity and performance level (PL) of an ESSD. In actual business scenarios, you can also change the PL of a system disk or data disk for a cloud computer. This topic describes how to change the PL of an ESSD.

Background information

PLs

Alibaba Cloud disks are block storage devices that feature low latency, high performance, robust data persistence, and high reliability. For more information, see the "Cloud disks" section of the Overview of Block Storage topic.

By default, ESSDs are used for cloud computers of the Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency type in EDS. ESSDs are cloud disks that are developed based on the next-generation distributed block storage architecture and provide ultra-high performance. ESSDs incorporate the 25 Gigabit Ethernet and remote direct memory access (RDMA) technologies. A single ESSD can provide up to 1,000,000 random read/write IOPS and reduced one-way latency. For more information, see ESSDs.

PL

Maximum IOPS per ESSD

Capacity

PL0

PL1

50,000

20 GiB–32 TiB

PL2

Limits

  • Limits on upgrading and downgrading ESSD PLs:

    Source ESSD PL

    Destination ESSD PL

    PL0

You can upgrade an ESSD from PL0 to PL1, PL2, or PL3.

    PL1, PL2, and PL3

    • If the source ESSD is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis and its PL is one of PL1, PL2, and PL3, you can upgrade its PL to any other two PLs.

    • If the source ESSD is billed on a subscription basis, you can upgrade the source ESSD from the current PL to a higher PL.

  • You can use an Alibaba Cloud account to execute up to five PL change tasks at the same time in a region. If the number of tasks is greater than five, the excess tasks wait in a queue.

  • Your storage capacity determines whether you can use an ESSD of the desired PL. For example, the minimum storage size of a PL0 ESSD is 20 GiB and that of a PL3 ESSD is 1,261 GiB. If your storage size cannot reach the minimum storage size of an ESSD of the desired PL, you cannot upgrade your ESSD of the current PL to an ESSD of the desired PL. We recommend that you scale up an ESSD before you change the current PL of the ESSD to another PL. For information about how to scale up an ESSD, see Scale up the partition of a data disk.

Impacts

  • During the PL change process, your ESSD may not provide stable performance. We recommend that you perform the change operation during off-peak hours.

  • During the PL change process, the cloud computers that use the ESSD can be used as expected.

  • The PL change operation may take several hours to complete. The actual amount of time consumed by the change operation varies based on the read/write IOPS, storage capacity, and ESSD category. We recommend that you view the PL change progress in the EDS console.

  • During the PL change process, you cannot perform the following operations on ESSDs that are being upgraded and downgraded.

    • Cancel the PL change task

    • Change the ESSD PL

    • Create snapshots

    • Scale up the ESSD

    • Partition and format the ESSD

    • Re-initialize the ESSD

    • Attach or detach the ESSD

    • Roll back the ESSD by using a snapshot

    • You cannot change the OS if the ESSD is used as a system disk

  • In rare cases, the PL change operation may fail due to resource issues. If you fail to change the PL of the ESSD, try again later.

Billing

The billing method of an ESSD does not change after you change the PL of the ESSD. Take note of the following billing rules:

  • If you purchase a cloud computer that is billed on a monthly subscription basis, the billing method of the original ESSD is subscription. After you change the PL of the ESSD, its billing method remains unchanged. You are charged for the price difference between the PLs during the subscription duration.

  • If you purchase a cloud computer that is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, the billing method of the original ESSD is pay-as-you-go. After you change the PL of the ESSD, its billing method remains unchanged. You are charged for the price difference between the PLs.

For information about the ESSD pricing, see Block storage devices.

Prerequisites

  • A cloud computer of the Enterprise Graphics or High Frequency type is created. For more information, see Create cloud computers.

  • The cloud computer must be in the Running or Stopped state.

  • (Recommended) A snapshot is created to back up data of an ESSD. For more information, see Use snapshots (public preview).

Procedure

  1. Log on to the EDS console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resources & Terminals > Cloud Computers.

  3. In the upper-left corner of the top navigation bar, select a region.

  4. On the Cloud Computers page, find the cloud computer that you want to manage, click the ⋮ icon in the Actions column, and then choose Modify Disk.

  5. In the Change Disk Configuration dialog box, click Upgrade/Downgrade in the Actions column and select a destination PL for the system disk or data disk.

  6. Confirm the fees after you change the PL and click Confirm.

During the PL change, the cloud computer is in the Upgrading state on the Cloud Computers page.
