This topic describes the background information and usage notes of switching the region in which your Data Management (DMS) service resides and how to switch the region.
Background information
You can use DMS to manage database instances worldwide regardless of the region in which your DMS service resides. When you use DMS to manage and develop data, the data that is generated, such as operation logs and tickets, is saved in the region in which your DMS service resides. Your database instances and the DMS service may reside in different countries or regions. For example, you may use the DMS service that resides in the China (Hangzhou) region to manage a MySQL database instance that resides in the Singapore region.
In this case, cross-border data transmission is involved. If cross-border data transmission is prohibited by laws or regulations of the country or region in which the database instance resides, you must switch the region in which your DMS service resides to the same region as the database instance.
For example, Singapore has laws and regulations that prohibit cross-border data transmission. If your DMS service resides in the China (Hangzhou) region, you must switch the region from China (Hangzhou) to Singapore.
Scenarios
To comply with the laws and regulations of the location of your business or access DMS in a region that is nearest to the location of your business, you can switch the region in which your DMS service resides.
If your business resides in a single region, we recommend that you switch the region in which your DMS service resides to the region in which your business resides.
If your business resides in multiple regions and some regions have compliance requirements for your business, you can select the region to deploy your DMS service based on the regions in which your business resides. If no special requirements exist, you can select an appropriate region based on your business requirements.
Prerequisites
Before you switch your DMS service to a new region, you must manually clear the resources in the original region in which your DMS service resides.
Operations that you must perform
Disable the IP address whitelist feature. For more information, see Access IP whitelist.
Disable the secure access proxy feature. For more information, see Enable the secure access proxy feature.
Delete or pause all task flows.
Delete or disable all users except the tenant owner and the current user who logs on to the DMS console. For more information, see the Disable a user section of the "Manage users" topic.
Remove all database instances from DMS. For more information, see Remove one or more instances.
Operations that are recommended to perform
Disable the sensitive data protection feature for all database instances. For more information, see Disable the sensitive data protection feature.
Close all tickets used for clearing historical data. For more information, see Clear historical data.
Delete or pause all SQL tasks that are in progress or not executed. For more information, see Manage tasks.
Export and back up the operation logs of DMS to Simple Log Service. For more information, see Export operation logs of DMS to Simple Log Service.
Usage notes
After your DMS service is switched to a new region, take notes of the following items:
By default, you can access DMS only in the new region. You cannot access DMS in the original region. If you want to access DMS in the original region, you must switch the DMS service back to the original region.
The Alibaba Cloud accounts and Resource Access Management (RAM) users that you use to log on to the DMS console can access and use DMS only in the new region.
The DMS service in the new region is brand new without any existing data. You need to register instances, add users, configure security rules for instances, and manage permissions in DMS. For more information, see Register an Alibaba Cloud database instance, the Add a user of the "Manage users" topic, Security rule, and Manage permissions.
The resources of DMS that you purchased in the original region are not affected and can be used in the new region.
Procedure
- Log on to the DMS console V5.0.
Go to the region switch feature.
Move the pointer over the icon, select Settings, and then click Switch.
You can also view the current region in which your DMS service resides in the Data Processing Region section.
NoteIf you use the DMS console in simple mode, click the icon in the top navigation bar. In the menu that appears, click Switch.
In the Switch Data Processing Region dialog box, select a new region from the New Region drop-down list and click Precheck.
After the precheck succeeds, click Switch Now.
In most cases, it takes approximately 30 minutes to switch regions.
After the DMS service is switched to the new region, refresh the page.
FAQ

Q: Is the default region in which DMS resides the region in which my Alibaba Cloud account resides? Can I view the region in which the DMS service resides before DMS provides the region switchover feature?
A: No, the default region in which DMS resides is not the region in which your Alibaba Cloud account resides. You cannot view the region in which your DMS service resides before DMS provides the region switchover feature. By default, the region in which the DMS service resides is the region that is nearest to the location where you log on to the DMS console for the first time.
