You can implement disaster recovery for Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances across regions and zones in the Cloud Backup console. This topic describes the steps required for this scenario.
The following procedure shows how to implement disaster recovery for ECS instances in the Cloud Backup console.
The operations required to implement cross-region disaster recovery and cross-zone disaster recovery are basically the same. In this example, cross-region disaster recovery is implemented.
You are not charged for activating Cloud Backup. You are charged for the Cloud Backup client that you use to implement ECS disaster recovery and the cross-region replication traffic. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.
Create a disaster recovery site pair
Create a disaster recovery site pair in the Cloud Backup console. A disaster recovery site pair consists of a primary site and a secondary site. You must configure the name, region and VPC of the primary site and secondary site.
Add the ECS instances to be protected
You must add the ECS instances to be protected. This step ensures that the ECS instances can be initialized.
You must enable real-time replication for ECS instances to ensure that data can be replicated to Alibaba Cloud in real time.
Perform a disaster recovery drill
A disaster recovery drill is an important part of disaster recovery. It allows you to run a protected ECS instance on the cloud to verify whether your applications can run as expected.
Regular disaster recovery drills ensure that you can run your applications on restored ECS instances at any time. If a critical error occurs in the primary site, you can switch your workloads to the secondary site.
After you replicate applications on a protected ECS instance in Region A to Region B, you can also perform a reverse replication to replicate applications from Region B to Region A.
