ApsaraDB for OceanBase:Configure backup strategies

Last Updated:Jun 14, 2023

OceanBase Database allows you to modify backup strategies in terms of the backup cycle, backup time, backup retention period, and whether to enable remote backup. When you create a cluster instance, a backup strategy is created by default, and log backup is enabled.

Set a backup strategy

  1. Log on to the ApsaraDB for OceanBase console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Instances.

  3. On the Instances page, click the name of the target cluster instance to go to the Cluster Instance Workspace page.

  4. In the left-side navigation pane, click Backup and Restoration. On the Backup and Restoration page, click Backup Strategy.

  5. If you back up the cluster for the first time, the default backup strategy is displayed.

  6. Click Modify Backup Strategy and set the following parameters.

    Parameter

    Default value

    Description

    Backup Cycle

The second day after the cluster instance is created.

For example, if you create a cluster instance on Monday, the default value of this parameter is Tuesday.

You can specify one or more days in a week on which data is backed up as needed. The system backs up data on the specified days every week.

We recommend that you back up data at least once a week for security purposes.

    Backup Time

    04:00

You can select a backup time from the drop-down list.

    • We recommend that you select a point in time during off-peak hours.

    • Do not select a backup time within the major compaction window, which is one hour before and one hour after a major compaction is performed. Otherwise, the backup task will be delayed.

    Data Backup Retention Period (Days)

    7

By default, the backup data is retained for seven days. The maximum retention period is 720 days.

    Note

Data restoration generally depends on the latest data backup before the restoration time and on the log backup between the data back time and the restoration time. To ensure the restoration of data within the retention period, the backup may be retained for a number of days greater than the specified number.

    Data Backup Type

    Full

At present, only full data backup is supported.

    Backup Storage Region

    Local

    • If remote backup is not enabled, the backup files are saved in the region where the current cluster instance is located.

    • If remote backup is enabled, you need to select a region for saving the backup files.

After you enable remote backup, bills are generated based on the data volume and retention period. For more information about the billing rules, see Billing for backup and recovery.

    Log Backup

    Enabled

Log backup is enabled by default and cannot be disabled.

If you enable log backup, you can restore the cluster to the snapshot point of the backup set and any point in time within the time range specified for the log backup.

    Remote Backup

    Disabled

You can determine whether to enable remote backup based on your business requirements.

    • Only one remote region is supported. Once you confirm the region for remote backup, it cannot be changed. If remote backup is disabled or the remote region is changed, the previously configured remote backup files will be cleaned up according to existing cleanup strategies.

    • The remote backup cycle feature is available for whitelisted users only. To activate the remote backup cycle feature, contact OceanBase Technical Support. You can set the remote backup cycle to Week or Month. If you specify Week, the system displays seven days of a week for local backup cycle. If you specify more than one day, you can set the remote backup cycle to at least once a week. If you specify Month, you can set the backup cycle to once or twice a month.

    • By default, the remote backup data is retained for 30 days. The maximum retention period is 720 days.

    Note

Remote backup relies on local backup. However, the frequency, cycle, and data retention strategy of remote backup can be different from those of local backup. Data restoration generally depends on the latest data backup before the restoration time and on the log backup between the data back time and the restoration time. To ensure the restoration of data within the retention period, the backup may be retained for a number of days greater than the specified number.

Backup Retention Strategy Upon Instance Deletion

Retain Last Backup Data (30 Days)

You can specify whether to immediately delete all backup data or retain the backup set for 30 days when you release the instance.

    3Backup Strategy 2

  7. Click OK.
