Public cloud is a cloud infrastructure provisioned for use by the general public, individuals or businesses. Essentially, third-party public cloud providers lease servers within a virtual environment, which is accessible over Internet. Users can then access these servers by purchasing public cloud services such as cloud servers, data storage, and other cloud-related services.
Public cloud is considered a cost-effective solution because you don’t need to buy or install physical servers. Public cloud also frees you from operation and maintenance (O&M) of servers, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). This allows you to develop your website or applications without worrying about O&M or purchasing additional hardware as you would with a private cloud solution. Public cloud also works on a “pay-as-you-go” model, which allows you to pay for only the resources that you need.
Different from public cloud, a private cloud is a model of cloud computing that provides a dedicated cloud environment to a single organization. Private cloud can be operated internally by an in-house IT team, behind that organization’s firewall, so an organization has more control of its compute resources. Private cloud is mainly used by enterprises, so it is also considered a type of enterprise cloud.
Private cloud resides on an organization’s intranet or in a provider’s data center where all of the data is protected behind a firewall. Private cloud is the cloud solution with the highest level of security, however the cost might not be affordable for all businesses.
Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing model that combines one or more public cloud and private cloud environments through a network connection, which allows for sharing of data and applications between the different cloud environments.
A hybrid cloud environment allows enterprises to distribute workloads across different cloud environments according to business needs. For example, a company can run core services in a private cloud environment to have better control and customize the environment to meet their needs. When the workload exceeds the limits of the available resources, the additional work can be transferred automatically to the public cloud environment. This approach provides extra capacity to services on demand, a method commonly known as "cloud bursting". As the extra demands will be run on the public cloud, there are virtually no limits to storage, compute, and all other capacities.
Hybrid cloud lets you experience the benefits of both private and public clouds. It provides high scalability, virtually unlimited storage space, flexible payment models, and is cost effective, just like public cloud. Hybrid cloud is also highly secure; it gives you more flexibility and control over cloud resources such as those in a private cloud.
Security is still cited as one of the primary reasons to avoid the public cloud. Once upon a time, these concerns made a certain amount of sense. The security tools available from public cloud providers in earlier times were less advanced.
Today, however, we have moved past that age. Even though some people still think the public cloud is insecure, and organizations may still be hesitant to adopt the public cloud for that reason, this mindset will stifle efforts to innovate via the cloud. It will prevent organizations from gaining the cost benefits, application deployment advantages and agility that are products of a cloud-first strategy.
This article explains why the public cloud, when used properly, is as secure as any other type of deployment environment—and may even be more secure in most situations than other deployment options.
The cloud computing and infrastructure associated with the hybrid cloud has made a swift shift as a mainstream solution. As enterprises and organizations today need solutions that cater to the evolved requirements of cloud management, the cloud computing approach had to evolve with it. The demand for an agile framework grew ten-fold. An environment that allows multi-cloud integration and a seamless shift of services to meet business transformation and expansion goals was desperately needed.
Gartner predicts by 2020, 90% of organizations will adopt hybrid infrastructure management capabilities. An increasing number of enterprises are leveraging on a mix of on-premises or dedicated private clouds, different public cloud platforms across multiple cloud service providers, and their own legacy platforms, making interoperability of data and applications between various cloud environments, to achieve both the business agility, elasticity and scalability, cost optimization, and flexibility without redundancy of public cloud, and the data privacy, security, and compliance of private cloud.
