Farming is a complex industry that is often overlooked by technology innovators. A problem as simple as managing the quality and quantity of eggs hatching can actually be extremely complicated, given its strong dependence on the micro-climate of the area. The problem of inconsistency in the quality and quantity of eggs hatching is typically because there is just not enough data to be used as a reference of micro-climate condition. Furthermore, local farmers may not have the adequate tools to measure the hatching process, and existing tools available on the market can be expensive and may require complex technical setup.

To support the pace of the local poultry industry, farmers can maximize the eggs-hatching process by using Internet of Things (IoT) technology to collect and analyze data more effectively. IoT and Alibaba Cloud technologies can increase the work efficiency of farmers and the quality and quantity of the hatching process.

My application is an IoT and cloud-based solution for egg-hatching activities in poultry production and supply chain. It aims to monitor and control the egg hatching process remotely, with an alert/warning system, utilizing data-driven and insightful post-harvesting process strategy to help farmers/processors to improve their quantity of hatching eggs. It uses ambient temperature and humidity sensors, to capture the real-time data that are essential to optimize and control the eggs quantity and to ensure an efficient and sustainable production process.

The solution is built on top of a network sensor framework consisting of microcontroller (MCU) , or Raspberry as IoT edge device programmed in the Linux Operating System on computers, which is used to measure humidity and temperature in the hatching process using the low-cost sensor modules. And at the same time, WiFi, 3/4G, LoRa, or NB-IoT will be utilized for Internet connection and data transmission to the Cloud.

MQTT is used as the standard Machine to Machine communication protocol is used to send sensor data to Alibaba Cloud IoT Platform. The monitoring and control system deployed on the sample platform on the Cloud will utilize the data collected for further processing and analytics.

Sensor data collected on Cloud will be stored in the influx database as time-series data, and organized with meta information, such as device id, location, post-harvest activity details, and local timestamp. And the data can be visualized in real-time through mobile app, and web dashboard.

By using IoT sensors and cloud-based system, farmers could easily monitor the hatching process in real-time without excessive work and additional human resources. At the same time, farmers could setup alarm for specific variables to avoid undesired condition. With Alibaba Cloud OSS, the long-term historical data can be stored on the cloud with low cost. In the future, data analytics and machine learning mechanism, such as MaxCompute, can be applied to those historical data to optimize the system with a more intelligent detection and decision model, so as to further improve the resource utilization and production efficiency. These are our advantages, and with them, we are confident to make our innovation to change the whole poultry industry.
