This article introduces the basic principles of Alibaba Cloud Data Transmission Service (DTS) and the database migration process.
DTS is a convenient, secure, and effective database migration tool, and you can easily get started with Cloud Migration based on DTS's ability to migrate without stopping services.
DTS also supports real-time subscription of database logs and real-time synchronisation of data, in addition to the data migration function. Business situations such as computer disaster backup, multi-idc-live, real-time synchronization of business data to the data warehouse, asynchronous message notification, and cache upgrade can be realized through users of these features.
Alibaba Cloud provides a migration service called Data Transmission Service (DTS), to reduce the migration cost to users. DTS supports data transmission between data sources such as relational databases, NoSQL, and Big Data (OLAP). It is a data transmission service that integrates data migration, data log real-time subscription, and real-time data synchronization.
DTS provides data migration without stopping services, enabling the smooth completion of the migration of database data without stopping the services related to the source database. Users can apply data migration in various scenarios:
In addition to data migration, DTS helps complete various business scenarios such as data disaster backup, multi-idc-live, real-time synchronization of business data with the data warehouse, asynchronous message notification, and cache update.
DTS supports dozens of data sources including Oracle, MySQL, SQLServer, PostgreSQL, DB2, Redis, and MongoDB. Data transmission services have been provided to tens of thousands of enterprise customers.
The DR IDC is focused on Data Disaster Recovery empowered by the Data Transfer Service of Alibaba Cloud. The associated upper-layer framework DR solutions must be designed based on their own technical architectures for particular applications.
In addition to offering the remote DR functionality, Data Transmission Facility also allows zero-downtime company migra to be introduced.
Due to the ACID capability of databases, the Data Storage Facility is often used to store core business line data. Data in the servers must be backed up in real time to avoid key organization data loss due to a cloud server outage and the resulting service unavailability. That is, to minimize data loss, in addition to the existing data, business update data also needs to be backed up in real time.
Data Transmission Service provides a variety of remote DR solutions for you to choose from, including the Alibaba Cloud cross-region DR, cross-cloud vendor DR, and local DR solutions.
If your business is already deployed in region A of Alibaba Cloud, you can use Data Transmission Service to build a DR IDC in region B. If the business in region A fails, it is switched to region B, preventing business unavailability due to a failure in region A. The following figure shows the specific business architecture.
As shown in the figure above, when Region A normally provides the service, the business writing traffic and primary reading traffic are undertaken by business and data storage in Region A. The disaster recovery data in Region B can provide querying, reporting, testing or backup capabilities, further reducing the cost of disaster recovery while ensuring the high availability of businesses.
When a fault occurs in region A, the traffic is directly switched to region B allowing the business to be restored in seconds. This prevents the economic losses and the negative impact on the company's brand that could be caused by the fault.
If your business is supported by another cloud vendor, you can still use Alibaba Cloud as a backup data center. By building a DR IDC on Alibaba Cloud with Data Transmission Service enabled, you can eliminate business unavailability due to a fault of the cloud vendor.
As shown in the preceding figure, when the cloud vendor is operating normally, the write traffic and the majority of read traffic to the business are carried by the storage resources of the vendor. The DR data on Alibaba Cloud can be used for querying, reporting, testing, or backup purposes, further reducing DR costs while ensuring a high business availability.
When the cloud vendor encounters a fault, the traffic is directly switched to Alibaba Cloud and the business can be restored in seconds. This prevents the economic losses and the negative impact on the company's brand that could be caused by the fault.
If your business is not migrated to the cloud yet, you can use Alibaba Cloud as another data center of yours. The establishment of cloud disaster recovery centers on Alibaba Cloud through DTS can avoid business unavailability caused by a fault in the local IDC center. Compared with the self-built IDC disaster recovery center in other regions, this disaster recovery solution boasts evident advantages such as a low cost and high scalability.
As shown in the figure above, when the local self-built IDC normally provides the service, the business writing traffic and primary reading traffic are undertaken by business and data storage in the local self-built IDC. The DR data on Alibaba Cloud can be used for querying, reporting, testing, or backup purposes, further reducing DR costs while ensuring a high business availability.
When self-built IDC suffers a regional fault, the business will switch the traffic directly to Alibaba Cloud and the business can be restored within seconds, perfectly avoiding the economic losses caused by the fault and the impact on the company's brand.
Data Transmission Service (DTS) helps you migrate data between data storage types, such as relational database, NoSQL, and OLAP. The service supports homogeneous migrations as well as heterogeneous migration between different data storage types.
DTS also can be used for continuous data replication with high availability. In addition, DTS can help you subscribe to the change data function of ApsaraDB for RDS. With DTS, you can easily implement scenarios such as data migration, remote real time data backup, real time data integration and cache refresh.
