Elastic Desktop Service:Play back or download screen recordings

Last Updated:Jun 27, 2024

Elastic Desktop Service (EDS) provides the screen recording audit feature. Once an administrator enables the feature for a cloud computer, the system automatically records the operations of an end user when the end user uses the cloud computer. The feature allows administrators to audit the behavior of end users on cloud computers for security purposes. This topic describes how to view or download a screen recording file.

Usage notes

When an end user connects to a cloud computer, the policy that is associated with the cloud computer determines whether the system starts to record the screen of the cloud computer. You can enable the screen recording audit feature in a policy and associate the policy with a cloud computer when you create the cloud computer. Alternatively, you can enable the feature for a cloud computer after the cloud computer is created. For more information, see Configure the screen recording audit feature (public preview).

If the feature is enabled in a policy that is associated with a cloud computer whose image supports screen recording audit, the system automatically records the operations that are performed on the cloud computer upon connection. The recording starts based on your screen recording settings. Then, the system continuously uploads recordings to an Object Storage Service (OSS) bucket.

Before you view or download a screen recording file, take note of the following items:

  • Make sure that you have the permissions to enable the screen recording audit feature as a Resource Access Management (RAM) user. For more information, see Grant permissions to a RAM user.

  • Screen recording files belong to the cloud computers for which the screen recording audit feature is enabled.

  • When the system uploads a screen recording of a cloud computer to an OSS bucket, the recording is split into small recordings, and each recording is 32 MB in size. If the one of the recordings is less than 32 MB in size, the recording continues until the size accumulates to 32 MB or until an end user disconnects from the cloud computer.

Play back or download screen recordings

After the system stops recording operations of an end user on a cloud computer, the screen recordings are saved to an OSS bucket. To play back or download screen recording files of a cloud computer, use one of the methods that are described in the following table.

FAQ

  • Although the screen recording audit feature is enabled in a policy that is associated with a cloud computer, no screen recording files of the cloud computer can be found. What do I do?

To resolve the issue, check the following causes:

    • Check whether the image of the cloud computer supports the screen recording audit feature.

    • Check whether an end user has connected to and used the cloud computer.

  • Can the system automatically delete screen recording files that are stored in OSS buckets?

    • Screen recording files are stored in OSS buckets based on the retention period that you specified when you enabled the screen recording audit feature. The system automatically deletes the screen recordings when the retention period elapses.

    • Even if you disassociate the policy in which the screen recording audit feature is enabled from a cloud computer and delete the policy, the system retains the screen recording files of all associated cloud computers until the specified retention period elapses.
