Web Application Firewall:Renewal policy

Last Updated:Feb 12, 2026

Your protection service automatically stops when your Web Application Firewall (WAF) instance expires. To prevent service interruptions, manually renew your instance or enable auto-renewal before its expiration date. This topic describes how to renew a subscription WAF instance.

Note

Pay-as-you-go WAF instances are billed based on actual usage. You are charged after use and do not require renewal.

Instance Expiration Information

The expiration rules for subscription WAF instances are as follows:

  • Expiration reminders: The system sends renewal reminders by text message or email 15, 7, 3, and 1 day before your instance expires.

  • Effect of expiration: If you do not renew your instance before it expires, your WAF configurations are retained for 15 days after the expiration date.

    • If you renew the instance within 15 days, your original configurations remain effective.

    • If you do not renew the instance within 15 days, the system automatically releases your configurations on the 16th day. The protection service stops immediately. To continue using WAF, you must purchase and configure a new instance.

      Important

For domain names that use a CNAME record to connect to WAF, Alibaba Cloud deletes the CNAME record when the configurations are released. If you have not changed the DNS record of your domain name back to the origin server, your domain name becomes inaccessible.

To prevent service interruption, renew your instance promptly upon receiving a notification.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Web Application Firewall 3.0 console. From the top menu bar, select the resource group and region (Chinese Mainland or Outside Chinese Mainland) for the WAF instance.

  2. In the left navigation pane, click Overview.

  3. You can renew the WAF instance.

    • Manual renewal

      1. On the Overview page, in the top-right corner of the instance basic information card, click Renew.

      2. In the Renew panel, select a Duration, read and accept the Terms of Service, click Purchase Now, and complete the payment.

After you complete the payment, you can view the WAF instance's new expiration date on the instance information card.

    • Auto-renewal

      1. On the Overview page, in the instance basic information card area in the top-right corner, click Auto-Renewal.

      2. On the Manual Renewal tab of the Renewal Management page, locate the WAF instance and click Enable Auto-renewal in the Actions column.

      3. In the Enable Auto-Renewal dialog box, select Unified Auto Renewal Cycle, and click Enable Auto-Renewal.

After you enable auto-renewal, you can view or modify instance renewal information on the Auto-Renewal tab. Before your instance expires, Alibaba Cloud sends you a reminder, automatically deducts the renewal fee from your account balance, and creates a renewal order. You do not need to renew your instance manually.

        Note
        • The renewal fee is automatically deducted 9 days before the instance expires. Ensure that your Alibaba Cloud account has a sufficient balance. If you receive a notification that auto-renewal failed, manually renew the instance before it expires, and then enable auto-renewal again.

        • You can use coupons for auto-renewal payments. Alibaba Cloud automatically applies eligible coupons, so no manual action is required.

        • Auto-renewal takes effect the day after you enable it.
