After the I/O burst feature of general Enterprise SSDs (ESSDs) is released, the feature has caught widespread attention due to its innovative approach to decoupling IOPS from storage capacity. Alibaba Cloud decides to provide a limited-time free offer for the I/O burst feature within the specified period. For more information about the feature, see Performance of general ESSDs and Use the I/O burst feature.
Effective date
Starting from June 20, 2024
Further notice will be provided regarding the end time of the event. Please stay informed.
Event details
You can use the I/O burst feature free of charge within the event.
After the event ends, you are offered with an increased free quota on burstable I/O operations on an ApsaraDB RDS instance. You are charged only for the burstable I/O operations that exceed the free quota on your RDS instance. For more information, see Billing rules. The following table describes the free quotas on burstable I/O operations for different RDS editions.
RDS edition | Free quota |
RDS Basic Edition | Increased from 100,000 I/O operations per hour to 300,000 I/O operations per hour |
RDS High-availability Edition | Increased from 200,000 I/O operations per hour to 600,000 I/O operations per hour |
RDS Cluster Edition | Increased from 500,000 I/O operations per hour to 800,000 I/O operations per hour |
Before the event ends, the system notifies you of the charges by text message, email, and internal message.
Before the promotion ends, more IOPS-related promotional activities with significant discounts and free offerings are provided.
Billing rules
If the number of burstable I/O operations on an RDS instance exceeds the free quota, you are charged for the excess part. The fee for the I/O burst varies based on the RDS edition.
Unit price of burstable I/O operations
USD 0.0015 per 10,000 I/O operations
If the number of excess burstable I/O operations is less than 10,000, you are charged for 10,000 burstable I/O operations.
Examples
If the number of burstable I/O operations on an RDS instance that runs RDS High-availability Edition within 1 hour is 602,000, the following fees are generated.
Actual number of burstable I/O operations | 602,000 per hour |
Free quota | 600,000 per hour |
Excess burstable I/O operations | 2,000 per hour |
Actual fee | 10,000 × USD 0.0015/10,000 = USD 0.0015 |
Billing
Fee for a general ESSD = Fee for the storage capacity that you purchase for your RDS instance + Fee for burstable I/O operations
Hourly fee for burstable I/O operations = (Total number of burstable I/O operations on all RDS instances in a database system - Free quota on burstable I/O operations) × Unit price of burstable I/O operations
You are charged for the burstable I/O operations on general ESSDs based on the pay-as-you-go billing method. The system generates bills on an hourly basis.
Examples
Basic information: An RDS instance that runs RDS High-availability Edition and provides a storage capacity of 1,000 GB resides in the China (Beijing) region. The baseline IOPS is 50,000.
Instance status: The number of burstable I/O operations per second is 20,000. The burst lasts for 40 seconds every hour throughout a month.
The following fees are generated.
Actual number of burstable I/O operations | 800,000 per hour |
Free quota | 600,000 per hour |
Excess burstable I/O operations | 200,000 per hour |
Actual fee per month | USD 0.0015 × (80 - 60) × 24 × 30 = USD 21.6 |
The following table compares the fees for the I/O bust feature of a general ESSD and an ESSD of performance level 2 (PL2).
Storage type | Storage unit price (USD/month) | Storage cost (USD) | Fee for burstable I/O operations (USD) | Total fee (USD/month) |
General ESSD | 244.8 | 244.8 × 1 = 244.8 | 21.6 | 244.8 + 21.6 = 266.4 |
PL2 ESSD | 489.6 | 489.6 × 1 = 489.6 | N/A | 489.6 |
