Express Connect:Billing of cross-region data transfer (billed by CDT)

Last Updated:Jul 22, 2024

If an Express Connect router (ECR) is used for cross-region connections, data transfer bills are generated by Cloud Data Transfer (CDT). This topic describes the billing rules of cross-region data transfers over an ECR.

Prerequisites

If you want to use Express Connect circuits of China Unicom to establish connections between regions in the Chinese mainland and regions outside the Chinese mainland, make sure that you have completed the cross-border compliance verification. To apply for the certificate to use the cross-border connection service of China Unicom, submit your application on the Apply for cross-border Express Connect circuits of China Unicom page.

Billing rules

Cross-region data transfers are classified into the following categories:

  • Local data transfers: Data is transmitted between regions in the Chinese mainland or between regions outside the Chinese mainland.

  • Cross-border data transfers: Data is transmitted between regions in the Chinese mainland and regions outside the Chinese mainland.

If you establish a cross-region connection by using an ECR, CDT bills the inbound and outbound data transfers over the connection. In hybrid cloud networking, you are charged for data transfer from a virtual private cloud (VPC) to a virtual border router (VBR) and from the VBR to the VPC. In on-premises networking, you are charged for data transfer from VBR 1 to VBR 2 and from VBR 2 to VBR 1. For more information, see Billing overview and Cross-region data transfers.

Note
  • The bills of cross-account and cross-region data transfers are generated within the Alibaba Cloud account to which the ECR belongs.

  • Cross-region data transfers are billed based on ECRs. The data transfer allocation is not supported.

Example

Note

The unit price of data transfer in this example is for reference only. The actual prices on your bills shall prevail. For more information about how to query bills of data transfers in CDT, see Query bills and usage

A company creates a data center in the China (Hangzhou) region and a VPC in the Germany (Frankfurt) region. The following figure shows the cross-border connection that is established by using an ECR between the data center and the VPC.

For example, the following items describe the amount of outbound data transfers.

  • The amount of outbound data transfers in the China (Hangzhou) region is 200 GB.

  • The amount of outbound data transfers in the Germany (Frankfurt) region is 100 GB.

The fee is calculated by using the following formula:

0.80 USD/GB × 200 GB + 0.80 USD/GB × 100 GB = 240 USD
