Elastic Compute Service:What do I do if system error 58 occurs while I access the shared directory of a NAS file system on a Windows operating system?

Last Updated:Nov 01, 2024

This topic describes the cause of system error 58 that occurs when you access the shared directory of a File Storage NAS file system on a Windows operating system, and how to fix the error.

Problem description

You cannot access the \\xx\myshare shared directory of a NAS file system on an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance that runs a Windows Server 2008 Standard 32-bit operating system.

Cause

The Windows Server 2008 Standard 32-bit operating system is incompatible with the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol version.

Solution

  1. Create a snapshot for the system disk of the instance to back up data.

For more information, see Create a snapshot of a disk.

  2. Replace the operating system (system disk) of the instance.

Replace the operating system of the instance with a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or later operating system. For more information, see Replace the operating system (system disk) of an instance.

  3. Use the snapshot to create a pay-as-you-go disk.

For more information, see Create a disk from a snapshot.

  4. Attach the new disk to the instance to restore data.

For more information, see Attach a data disk.

  5. After data is restored, we recommend that you release the disk in a timely manner.

For more information, see Release a disk.
