Database Backup:Back up a self-managed database in an on-premises data center connected to Alibaba Cloud through VPN Gateway or Smart Access Gateway to OSS or DBS

Last Updated:Nov 14, 2024

Database Backup (DBS) allows you to back up self-managed databases in on-premises data centers that are connected to Alibaba Cloud through VPN Gateway or Smart Access Gateway to Object Storage Service (OSS) or DBS. This topic describes how to back up a self-managed MySQL database deployed in an on-premises data center that is connected to Alibaba Cloud through VPN Gateway to OSS or DBS.

The procedure for backing up a self-managed database in an on-premises data center that is connected to Alibaba Cloud through Smart Access Gateway is similar to that through VPN Gateway.

Before you configure a backup schedule, you must configure the connection between the on-premises data center and the DBS server. The following configurations are required:

  1. Make sure that the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance in the specified Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) can access the self-managed database in your on-premises data center through VPN Gateway.

  2. Modify the configuration of the IPsec-VPN connection used for the VPC. Specifically, add the DBS Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) block to the local CIDR block, and change the connection version to ikev2.

  3. Modify the configuration of the local gateway based on that of the VPN gateway.

Download the information about the IPsec-VPN connection that is configured in the preceding step. Adjust the configuration of the local gateway based on the requirements on on-premises network devices and the modified configuration of the VPN gateway.

Note: The values of RemoteSubnet and LocalSubnet in the configuration for the local gateway device are opposite to the remote CIDR block and local CIDR block that you specified for the IPsec-VPN connection. For VPN Gateway, the remote CIDR block is the CIDR block of the on-premises data center, and the local CIDR block is that of the VPC. For the local gateway device, LocalSubnet indicates the CIDR block of the on-premises data center, whereas RemoteSubnet indicates that of the VPC.

The DBS CIDR block to be added varies with the region of the VPC. The following table lists the DBS CIDR blocks of regions that support database backup through VPN Gateway.

Configure a backup schedule

Log on to the DBS console. In the left-side navigation pane, click Backup Schedules. On the Backup Schedules page that appears, find the target backup schedule and click Configure Backup Schedule in the Actions column. In the Configure Backup Schedule wizard, set Database Location to Express Connect DB/VPN Gateway/Intelligent Gateway. 14
