Quite simply, I wanted to explore how AI could impact the natural world in a positive way, and help humanity to safeguard its future on the planet.
After centuries of technological progress which, from the invention of the wheel to AI technology itself – all of which have benefitted humanity enormously – the fate of the planet has been left hanging in the balance. And this, we have gradually realized over the last 50 years, is partly due to this progress.
Yet, technology is now aiding humanity more and more in finding ways to try and heal the planet. From wind farms and solar panels to recycling at every level of everyday life, we are relying on machines to help us turn the tide on the damage we have unwittingly caused our beautiful green and blue Earth.
For my AI-created artwork, I decided to focus on the oceans of our planet. Often, it's the fate of the cute and furry, land-dwelling animals that grab the headlines; the oceans get a cursory mention when scientists try to explain what a rise in the temperature of the Earth's waters means for the planet.
With my AI-artwork, I wanted to explore a scenario in which humanity could live and work in tandem with the ocean, while researching, maintaining, and protecting the myriad of lifeforms that call the world's massive aquatic ecosystems home.
I envisaged a fully functioning community, based in the ocean for periods of time, much like researchers working on a space station. The design of the community's structures would be created to align with nature's own deep-sea structures, to create suitable homes, work and leisure spaces for the researchers, support staff and their families to enjoy the world beneath the waves, as they strive to safeguard it.
I experimented with a number of AI diffusion and image-editing tools to create my picture “An Ocean of Possibilities”. I had many sources of reference flashing through my mind as I thought about my theme, from the writings of classic authors to Hollywood blockbusters.
In working with the AI diffusion tools, I created many different versions. I experimented with several prompts, including variations of: ocean wildlife conservation, underwater laboratory, sea-based scientific research community. One result had a very Steampunk feel in how it had designed the underwater structures; another had focused on the design of the laboratory. But I felt that both of these iterations had focused on the human element of the idea over and above that of the natural environment.
For this vision, I felt that humanity should be mindful of the fact that it would be a guest in the underwater habitat, and should therefore adapt its needs to align with the ecosystem, rather than imposing itself on the underwater landscape like a conquering hero.
A colleague remarked on my picture, saying that it looked otherworldly. I agreed. The depths of the oceans are synonymous with a sense of the vast unknown. Our human nature drives us to explore new worlds, and this too, I feel, is present in the artwork.
