The Open-Source Folks Talk – Episode 2: "From Open-Source to Open-Source"

This article discusses the meaning and origins of open-source and how open-source technology could evolve.

Have you ever thought about the meaning of open-source?

Open-source has different meanings to different people. The most important things are participation and sharing. In fact, OpenAnolis originated from the open-source Linux, specifically designed to be a replacement of CentOS. When Anolis OS is donated to OpenAtom, a third-party open-source foundation, this makes OpenAnolis return to the open-source scene, contributing to thousands of industries and creating value for businesses. In some ways, you can view this fact as OpenAnolis completing a full cycle, from open-source to open-source.

Let’s take a look at what kind of open-source road OpenAnolis has taken in the following content.

Anolis OS, was jointly initiated and opened-source by well-known manufacturers (such as Alibaba Cloud, UnionTech Software, mobile operators, and others).

Background - Coming from Internal Incubation and External Push

Anolis OS has accumulated a lot before coming out.

As early as 2010, Anolis was born inside Alibaba. In the early days of its establishment, it was destined to replace CentOS and contribute to China's basic software field. The Anolis OS has been polished in Alibaba for decades. It has supported the large-scale practice of Tmall Double 11 over the years. Its stability, security, and performance have withstood severe tests.

Three months after the open-source of Anolis OS, the shocking news of CentOS EOL came out. In December 2020, CentOS announced that it planned to stop maintaining the CentOS Linux project. At that time, CentOS was widely used in government affairs, telecommunications, finance, energy, the Internet, and other industries. The EOL brought severe challenges to users in various industries in China. It also provided new opportunities for the development of the domestic operating system industry. In October 2021, Anolis OS was unveiled at the Alibaba Cloud Apsara Conference. Its appearance has filled the gap, waiting for the test of time.

Testing from Practice - The Best Alternative to CentOS

For Internet companies, changes in operating systems (which are the underlying technical software) will have a huge impact on their business. OpenAnolis has done a lot of work to ensure the replacement of the underlying operating system in the environment of smooth business operation and realized the replacement goal of user insensitive, business improvement, and large-scale replication from scratch.

The essential difference between Anolis OS and other open-source operating systems is that it has comprehensively optimized cloud computing and has precipitated technology in practice rather than empty theory. Through the evolution of the kernel, the core technology of operating systems, the kernel-related technologies of OpenAnolis rank among the top in the subsystems of other open-source communities. OpenAnolis has also created the technical benchmark for Java virtual machines and full-stack cryptographic algorithm-related solutions and supported users with migration from other operating systems to Anolis OS smoothly.

Many manufacturers (such as UnionTech Software and Loongson) have released derivative versions based on Anolis OS. These derivative versions have landed in finance, telecommunications, electricity, transportation, government affairs, and other industries. "Only through large enough verification can the conclusion be drawn that Anolis OS is the best alternative to CentOS," said Tao Ma (General Director of OpenAnolis).

Fast Development of Anolis OS

Since the establishment of OpenAnolis in September 2020, Anolis OS has released 8.2, 8.4, 8.6, and other versions. It has developed to integrate x86, Arm, Loongson, RISC-V, etc., to have complete chip support and meet the needs of different computing scenarios.

After a year of development, the downloads of Anolis OS have increased five times, and the installations have reached more than 130 million. In terms of the R&D data, there are currently 50 SIG in the community, thousands of developers, and 300,000 community users.

In June, OpenAnolis released the R&D roadmap of the new-generation Anolis OS 23. The new version conveys its determination of independent innovation and represents a more complete technical route. It covers compiler, kernel, security, virtualization, cloud-native, and other fields, including more complete chip support. Let's wait and see!

From Open Source to Open Source - Donating Anolis

What is the essence of open-source? Xu Chen (Chairman of the OpenAnolis Operation Committee) said, "The essence of open-source is openness, sharing, collaboration, and win-win."

OpenAnolis took advantages of a lot of open-source technology from the upstream community in the early days and actively gave back to society. Currently, Anolis OS is being donated to OpenAtom, the third-party neutral open-source foundation.

"It's like sending our child out and letting him face bigger challenges and be tested by more people," said Tao Ma (General Director of OpenAnolis).

"OpenAnolis has developed into a highly innovative open source operating system community in China, with the leading industrial and technological influence," said Wenlong Sun (Secretary General of OpenAtom Open-Source Foundation). "OpenAnolis and more projects are welcome to donate to the Foundation to build the new ecosystem of open-source and open operating systems. I hope that the development of OpenAnolis will be more open in the future and become an important force in the global open-source ecology."

Xu Chen (Chairman of the OpenAnolis Operation Committee) believes that the name of the community is consistent with its large capacity and flexibility. It means that with the development of the industry, OpenAnolis can lead everyone in one direction. When many customers, users, and community enthusiasts ask how long OpenAnolis will last, he gave a direct and affirmative answer - at least ten years.
