On April 30, Alibaba Cloud officially released a new service level agreement (SLA) for Object Storage Service (OSS), which increases the promised availability in a single zone from 99.9% to 99.99% and the availability provided by cross-zone redundancy from 99.95% to 99.995%.
An SLA is a service quality commitment between a service provider and a customer that specifies the level and quality of services provided by a public cloud.
With the explosive growth of data due to the transformation from the traditional economy to the digital economy, an increasing number of enterprises choose to migrate their data to the cloud, where they can enjoy cloud storage that commits to availability levels far superior to traditional IT through an SLA. Generally, a cloud vendor can offer SLA-based availability five times higher than that of an on-premises data center at only a fraction of the costs.
The new SLA for OSS published by Alibaba Cloud increases the promised availability for different architectures from 99.9% and 99.95% to 99.99% and 99.995% respectively. This advance speaks to the efforts made to increase the stability of cloud storage over the past decade.
Based on the Apsara Distributed File System, a leading distributed storage product developed by Alibaba Cloud, Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (OSS) was designed using fragmented and distributed discrete storage technology to prevent potential faults when storing user data.
We use advanced network load balancing technology to maximize the response speed and overall performance of servers. Based on an automated detection feature, we quickly assign a new network if the current network service is unavailable. This ensures services are never interrupted.
Our solution incorporates outstanding metadata index failover capabilities. This means that, when one data node encounters a fault, another node with replicas of files stored in the failed node can provide services instead, preventing data loss and service interruption.
We use a strict protection mechanism to provide users with basic bucket read, write, and public read/write permissions. API calling is based on AccessKey ID and AccessKey secret credentials (separated from the logon account). We also implement URL signature verification, Resource Access Management (RAM) authentication (token), and Alibaba Cloud account and RAM user management to maximize data security.
Since its official release in 2011, OSS has successfully served hundreds of thousands of users. OSS has also provided essential support for the Double 11 Shopping Festival and every other major promotion in the Alibaba economy over many years.
Each year, it outdoes its past performance.
The present version of Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (OSS) will enable more enterprises to build elastic, stable, and secure cloud storage systems by taking advantage of the high reliability of cloud storage.
