Alibaba Cloud Ranks the World's Third Largest Cloud Services Provider for Two Consecutive Years
July 13, 2018
Hangzhou, China, [July 12, 2018] – Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, was ranked a top three cloud services provider globally (based on IaaS and IUS Providers' global revenue in 2017) in the newly published Market Share Analysis: IaaS and IUS, Worldwide, 2017 report, 28 June 2018, issued by Gartner, one of the world's leading research and advisory companies.
This is the second consecutive time in which Alibaba Cloud is named within top 3 in Gartner's market share ranking. In addition, Alibaba Cloud was also included in Gartner's 'Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Worldwide' Dennis Smith et al, published 23 May 2018 as a "visionary" services provider.
According to Gartner "The top four vendors are pure infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and accounted for 64% of the 2017 revenue growth. Market share is consolidating around these leading hyperscale cloud service providers, which now hold nearly 47% of the market share and which have economies of scale that make them formidable competitors." During the same period, Alibaba Cloud achieved IaaS annual revenue growth of 63%, making it the second fastest-growing services provider among the top four.
"[The company's] success in 2017 was driven by ongoing aggressive R&D investment. Alibaba [Cloud] has the financial capability to continue this trend and invest in global expansion via new regions, international-specific engineering efforts, and regional sales, support and marketing. This gives Alibaba [Cloud] the potential to become an alternative to the global hyperscale cloud providers in select regions over time," the report said.
Yeming Wang, Deputy General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Global said, "We believe Gartner's ranking reflects the fruitful results of our effort in pursuing an ambitious growth strategy. We also consider Gartner's analysis was spot on in that internationalization, a focus on building a dedicated local team to support enterprise customer development and increased R&D input are the three pillars that drive our growth."
In the past 12 months, Alibaba Cloud has opened data centers in India and Indonesia. It recently expanded into Turkey and launched EMEA Partners Program in Europe to strengthen its presence in these markets.
