Alibaba Cloud Included in Gartner Magic Quadrant for IaaS
June 30, 2017
Hangzhou, China, June 30, 2017 –Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, was included by Gartner, the world's leading research and advisory company, in its newly released Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Worldwide (Lydia Leong et al. / Published Date: 15 June 2017). This is the first time that Alibaba has been positioned in the Quadrant, placing it in the top echelon of global cloud players.
Though new to the Magic Quadrant, Alibaba Cloud moves straight into the 'visionaries' section, a demonstration of Gartner's recognition of Alibaba Cloud's strong performance in cloud IaaS in China, and its growing investment in new markets.
The prestigious IT Research Group also noted Alibaba Cloud's diverse set of capabilities which "today are already comparable to the service portfolios of other hyperscale providers." This is in addition to a broad global data center presence, which demonstrates "the vendor's potential to become an alternative to the global hyperscale cloud providers in select regions over time."
Alibaba Cloud offers a comprehensive suite of cloud computing services to support growing enterprises worldwide, including data storage, relational databases, big-data processing, and content delivery networks. It also recently announced its plan to launch MaxCompute in Europe, a big data platform that allows users to store and process large volumes of data such as images, video and audio to levels as high as TB (terabyte) or even PB (petabyte) in the second half of 2017. The service is already available in Singapore, the headquarters of Alibaba Cloud's international business.
Alibaba Cloud operates in multiple regions across Mainland China and has a presence in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and the U.S. (East and West Coast). With the three new data centers planned in Malaysia, India, and Indonesia, Alibaba Cloud will increase its total number of data center locations to 17, in a bid to support its rapidly growing international business and further strengthen its position both in APAC and across the globe.
