PolarDB:Billable items

Last Updated:Nov 15, 2024

The billable items of a PolarDB cluster include compute nodes, cluster storage usage, backup storage beyond the free quota, SQL Explorer (optional), and cold data archiving (optional). This topic describes the billable items of a PolarDB cluster and the applicable billing methods.

Cost distribution

The following figure shows the approximate cost distribution of the billable items of a PolarDB cluster.

Overview

Billable item

Description

Billing method

Compute nodes

  • Compute nodes include primary and read-only nodes.

  • You are charged for compute nodes based on the region, specifications, and usage duration.

  • Serverless dynamic resources and fixed-specification resources have different billing units. The billing unit of serverless resources is PolarDB Capacity Unit (PCU).

    Note

PCU stands for PolarDB Capacity Unit. One PCU is approximately equal to the capacity of 1 core and 2 GB of memory. In a PolarDB serverless cluster, resources are scaled in units of 0.5 PCUs.

  • Subscription

  • Pay-as-you-go

  • Serverless

Note

For information about the billing rules for compute nodes, see Compute nodes.

Cluster storage usage

  • The cluster storage space is used to store cluster data files, index files, log files, and temporary files. Log files include online and archived log files. You are charged based on your storage usage.

  • The fee varies based on the amount of stored data and the retention period.

  • Subscription

  • Pay-as-you-go

  • Pay-as-you-go + storage plans

  • Serverless

  • Serverless + storage plans

Note
  • You can separately specify the billing method for the storage of an Enterprise Edition cluster. If you select the pay-as-you-go billing method, you are charged on an hourly basis based on your actual storage usage. If you select the subscription billing method, you can predefine the maximum storage capacity and must pay upfront.

  • The storage of a Standard Edition cluster uses the same billing method as the compute nodes and cannot be separately specified.

  • We recommend that you purchase storage plans to reduce costs. You can use storage plans to offset cluster storage usage, backup storage usage, and cold data archiving storage usage. For more information, see Storage plans.

  • For information about the billing rules for storage, see Storage.

Backup storage beyond the free quota

  • Backup files consume storage space. PolarDB provides a free storage quota for backup files. If the fee quota is exhausted, you are charged for the excess storage usage of backup files.

  • Fees are billed based on the size and retention period of data backup files.

  • Pay-as-you-go

  • Pay-as-you-go + storage plans

Note
  • The backup storage is separately billed. If you set the Billing method parameter to Subscription when you purchase a cluster, the subscription billing method applies only to compute nodes. If your backup storage usage exceeds the free quota, fees are generated for the subscription cluster.

  • If you set your backup policy to When the cluster is released, the cluster data is automatically backed up, and the latest backup set is retained for a long period of time., fees are generated for backups that are retained for a long period of time after you unsubscribe from or release the cluster. To avoid the fees, delete the backup sets from the recycle bin. For more information, see Delete a released cluster.

  • We recommend that you purchase storage plans to reduce costs. You can use storage plans to offset cluster storage usage, backup storage usage, and cold data archiving storage usage. For more information, see Storage plans.

  • For information about the billing rules for backup storage, see Backup storage beyond the free quota.

SQL Explorer (optional)

  • The SQL Explorer feature of Database Autonomy Service (DAS) provides value-added capabilities such as security audit and performance diagnostics. You are charged if you use the SQL Explorer feature. A free storage quota is provided for the SQL Explorer feature. After this quota is exhausted, you are charged for the excess storage usage.

  • The fee varies based on the size and retention period of audit logs.

  • Pay-as-you-go

Note
  • SQL Explorer uses a separate billing method. If you set the Billing method parameter to Subscription when you purchase a cluster, the subscription billing method applies only to compute nodes. When you use SQL Explorer, additional fees are generated for the subscription cluster.

  • For information about the billing rules of SQL Explorer, see SQL Explorer (optional).

Cold data archiving (optional)

  • PolarDB provides the cold data archiving feature. After you enable the cold data archiving feature for a PolarDB cluster, you can separate cold data from tables in the PolarDB cluster and store the cold data in Object Storage Service (OSS) to reduce storage costs.

  • The cold data storage fees vary based on the size and retention period of the cold data.

  • Pay-as-you-go

  • Pay-as-you-go + storage plans

Note
  • The cold data archiving feature uses a separate billing method. If you set the Billing method parameter to Subscription when you purchase a cluster, the subscription billing method applies only to compute nodes. If you enable the cold data archiving feature for the subscription cluster, cold data storage fees are generated.

  • We recommend that you purchase storage plans to reduce costs. You can use storage plans to offset cluster storage usage, backup storage usage, and cold data archiving storage usage. For more information, see Storage plans.

  • For information about the billing rules of the cold data archiving feature, see Cold data archiving (optional).

GDN (optional)

The global database network (GDN) feature is provided free of charge. You are charged only for each PolarDB cluster in the GDN.

N/A

Multi-zone (optional)

You are not charged for the multi-zone deployment of a cluster.

N/A

Note

After you enable the Enable No-activity Suspension feature for a Serverless cluster, you are not charged for compute nodes when the cluster is suspended. However, you are charged for the cluster storage usage, backup storage usage beyond the free quota, and SQL Explorer (optional) storage usage.
