Workspace is a key concept in Platform for AI (PAI). Workspaces allow your organization or team to manage computing resources and user permissions in a centralized manner and provide tools and features for collaboration at every stage of AI development. Before you can use PAI, you must activate PAI and create a default workspace. This topic describes how to activate PAI and create a default workspace.
Activate PAI
You are not charged for activating PAI and creating a default workspace. However, you are charged when you use PAI modules. You can view the billing details of the modules in PAI bills. For more information, see Billing overview. Perform the following steps to activate PAI and create a default workspace.
Log on to the PAI console.
In the upper-left corner, select a region for activation, then complete authentication, authorization, and service activation.
Take note of the following items:
DWhen you use PAI for AI development, you may need to use other Alibaba Cloud services such as Object Storage Service (OSS) and MaxCompute. For more information, see Activate and grant permissions to dependent Alibaba Cloud services.
OSS is used to store AI development assets. Before you activate PAI, you can choose to perform one of the following actions:
Create an OSS bucket and bind it to the default workspace: Activate OSS, create a new bucket, and bind it to the default workspace of PAI.
Bind an existing OSS bucket to the default workspace: If OSS is already activated and you have an OSS bucket, bind it to the default workspace of PAI.
Do not bind the OSS bucket to the default workspace: Activate OSS without creating or binding any OSS buckets.
Additionally, you can activate other related services based on your requirements:
Activate pay-as-you-go MaxCompute: MaxCompute is a big data computing storage engine that provides robust computing and storage capabilities for PAI. For more information, see What is MaxCompute.
Activate pay-as-you-go DataWorks: DataWorks offers scheduling features for scheduled training jobs. For more information, see What is DataWorks.
Assign the algorithm developer role of the default workspace to all RAM users. For information about the role, see Appendix: Roles and permissions.
Upon successful activation, you can go to the console for AI development.
FAQ
What do I do if my account does not have the permissions to activate PAI and create a default workspace?
Description
After you log on to the PAI console, the Activate Platform for AI and create a default workspace button is grayed out and the "The current account does not have the permissions to activate Platform for AI. Contact the owner of the Alibaba Cloud account" message appears.
Solution
We recommend that you use your Alibaba Cloud account to activate PAI.
If you want to activate PAI as a RAM user, make sure that you attach the
AliyunPAIFullAccesspolicy to the RAM user. We do not recommend this solution because the permissions granted by the policy have a large scope. For more information, see Appendix: AliyunPAIFullAccess.
