Activate PAI and create a default workspace - Platform For AI

Workspace is a key concept in Platform for AI (PAI). Workspaces allow your organization or team to manage computing resources and user permissions in a centralized manner and provide tools and features for collaboration at every stage of AI development. Before you can use PAI, you must activate PAI and create a default workspace. This topic describes how to activate PAI and create a default workspace.

Activate PAI

You are not charged for activating PAI and creating a default workspace. However, you are charged when you use PAI modules. You can view the billing details of the modules in PAI bills. For more information, see Billing overview. Perform the following steps to activate PAI and create a default workspace.

Log on to the PAI console.
On the Welcome page, select a region in the top navigation bar and click the Activate Platform for AI and create a default workspace button.
In the Order Details step, confirm the basic activation information and configure the required parameters.
Take note of the following items:
- Activate Platform for AI and Other Services
  - When you use PAI for AI development, you may need to use other Alibaba Cloud services. For information about the scenarios that involve other Alibaba Cloud services, see Activate and grant permissions to dependent Alibaba Cloud services.
  - We recommend that you activate Object Storage Service (OSS) in this step. OSS is used to store AI development assets. For more information, see What is OSS. If you activate OSS in this step, you are charged for OSS only when you use the service. You can activate other services based on your business requirements.
- Assign the algorithm developer role of the default workspace to all RAM users
  By default, this option is selected. If you have multiple RAM users within your Alibaba Cloud account, we recommend that you unselect this option and grant permissions to the RAM users based on your business requirements.
- RAM Role Authorization
  Click Authorize Now and follow the on-screen instructions to grant RAM roles the required permissions.
  Note
  You must complete the authorization by using an Alibaba Cloud account.
After you confirm the configurations, click Activate and Create Default Workspace. When the activation is complete, you can click Go to Default Workspace or Log on to the PAI console to perform subsequent development.

FAQ

What do I do if my account does not have the permissions to activate PAI and create a default workspace?
- Description
  After you log on to the PAI console, the Activate Platform for AI and create a default workspace button is grayed out and the "The current account does not have the permissions to activate Platform for AI. Contact the owner of the Alibaba Cloud account" message appears.
- Solution
  - We recommend that you use your Alibaba Cloud account to activate PAI.
  - If you want to activate PAI as a RAM user, make sure that you attach the AliyunPAIFullAccess policy to the RAM user. We do not recommend this solution because the permissions granted by the policy have a large scope. For more information, see Appendix: AliyunPAIFullAccess.
