Hologres:Constraints and limits

Last Updated:Feb 04, 2026

This topic describes the constraints and limits of the Hologres service.

Limits on direct queries to MaxCompute

  • When you query a partitioned table in MaxCompute, the maximum number of partitions that can be scanned is 512. This limit is removed in Hologres V3.0.20 and later.

  • The maximum amount of underlying data that can be scanned in a single query is 200 GB, regardless of the number of tables or fields. This limit is removed in Hologres V3.0.20 and later.

  • Hologres does not support the built-in functions of MaxCompute.

UDF limits

  • Hologres does not support user-defined functions (UDFs) created in MaxCompute.

  • You cannot create or use UDFs in Hologres. However, Hologres supports the built-in functions of PostgreSQL.

Data type constraints

Hologres is compatible with the PostgreSQL ecosystem and supports a subset of PostgreSQL data types. For more information, see Data types.

HoloStudio limits

Note

HoloStudio is being upgraded to DataStudio. We recommend that you use DataStudio or HoloWeb for development because they provide more features and are easier to use. For more information, see DataWorks HoloStudio unpublishing announcement.

  • An instance can have multiple databases. You can attach a single database to multiple HoloStudio workspaces in the same region.

  • In HoloStudio, the Go to DataWorks for Scheduling operation uses the public resource group by default. To use a dedicated resource group, you can contact technical support or join the Hologres DingTalk group to request the configuration. For more information, see How do I get more online support?.

Purchase and billing limits

  • An Alibaba Cloud account can purchase a maximum of three instances per day.

  • You can purchase instances using the subscription or Pay-as-you-go billing method. You can convert a Pay-as-you-go instance to a subscription instance, but you cannot convert a subscription instance to a Pay-as-you-go instance.

  • If you use the Pay-as-you-go billing method and manually stop your instance in the Hologres console, billing for computing resources stops. However, you are still charged for storage resources until the instance is deleted.

  • If you purchase a subscription Hologres instance and your storage usage exceeds the purchased quota, the excess storage is billed on a Pay-as-you-go basis.
