To back up an SAP HANA database, you must first register its instance in the Cloud Backup console. This process automatically installs the necessary backup client on the host ECS instance, enabling you to perform backups.
Prerequisites
The Alibaba Cloud Cloud Backup service is activated. Activating Cloud Backup is free of charge. The following fees are incurred when you use the SAP HANA backup feature of Cloud Backup:
SAP HANA backup software usage fee: A software usage fee is charged for each SAP HANA instance, regardless of whether it is a standalone or a primary/secondary instance.
Storage capacity fee: You are charged based on the storage capacity of your data after deduplication and compression.

If you want to back up a database on an ECS instance, you must install Alibaba Cloud Cloud Assistant on the instance.
The ECS backup client requires Cloud Assistant.
If the ECS instance that you want to back up was purchased before December 1, 2017, you must manually install the Cloud Assistant client. For more information, see Install the Cloud Assistant client.
If the ECS instance that you want to back up was purchased on or after December 1, 2017, the Cloud Assistant client is pre-installed.
You have the SYSTEM username and password for the SAP HANA instance.
Usage notes
Only one SAP HANA instance is supported per ECS instance. Attempting to register a second instance on the same host will result in a "Failed to install HANA" error.
Direct backup is supported only for SAP HANA instances deployed on Alibaba Cloud ECS. To protect on-premises databases, you must first perform a local backup and then use Cloud Backup to back up the resulting database files. For more information, see Back up local files.
Backint supports multitenant database containers (MDCs) in SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 09 (Revision 94) and later, and SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 01 and later. Backint does not support single-container systems in SAP HANA 1.0.
Procedure
Log on to the Cloud Backup console.
In the navigation pane on the left, choose .
In the top navigation bar, select a region.
On the SAP HANA Instances tab, click Register SAP HANA Instance.
In the Register SAP HANA Instance panel, configure the connection information for the SAP HANA instance and install the client.
Configure the connection information and click Next.

Parameter
Description
Backup Vault
Configure the backup vault where backups are stored.
Create Vault: Specify a name for the new backup vault. This parameter is optional. If you leave it empty, a random name is assigned.
Select Vault: Select an existing backup vault from the backup vault name drop-down list.
ImportantAfter you create a backup vault and store backup data, you are charged for the storage capacity usage of the backup vault. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.
The system automatically selects the redundancy type based on what the region supports. In regions that support ZRS, a ZRS-enabled backup or archive vault is created by default. In other regions, a LRS-based backup or archive vault is created. You do not need to select the type manually.
Vault Name
Specify the name of the backup vault.
Vault Resource Group
This parameter is required only when Backup Vault is set to Create Vault. This parameter specifies the resource group to which the backup vault belongs.
Use resource groups to simplify resource and permission management for your Alibaba Cloud account. For more information, see Create a resource group.
SAP HANA Instance
Instance Alias
Add an alias for the SAP HANA instance that you want to back up. For example,
Dev-saphana.Host Address
Enter the private IP address of the ECS instance where the primary node of the SAP HANA instance resides. For example, 172.16.XX.XX.
Instance Number
Enter the instance number that was specified when you installed SAP HANA.
Username
Enter the username of the SYSTEM database. The username is usually SYSTEM.
Password
Enter the password that is used to connect to SAP HANA.
Use SSL
Turn on the Use SSL switch to connect to the database over an SSL connection.
Verify SSL Certificate
After you turn on the Verify SSL Certificate switch, the SSL certificate of the database server-side is verified.
HANA Resource Group
Specifies the resource group to which the SAP HANA instance belongs.
Install the backup client and click Create.
Select whether to Use HTTPS and select all nodes of the SAP HANA instance that you want to register. Cloud Backup installs an ECS backup client on these nodes. In the search bar, select Instance ID, Instance Name, or VPC ID, and then enter the full name or a keyword to search for the destination ECS instance.
NoteHTTPS can be enabled for secure data transfer. While this enhances security, it may impact performance due to encryption overhead. Any changes to this setting will take effect on the next backup or restore job.
The system automatically installs a backup client on the ECS instances that you selected. After the installation is complete, the status of the SAP HANA instance changes to Registered.

WarningDeleting an SAP HANA instance will also permanently delete all of its backup data and cause any running jobs to fail. Before proceeding, ensure you no longer need the data and that no jobs are active. This action cannot be undone.
Alert Settings
By default, alert notifications are sent to your Alibaba Cloud account if a backup fails or the client is disconnected from the server. The following methods are supported:
Disabled: No alert notifications are sent.
Same as Backup Vault: The alert method is the same as that of the backup vault.
Notify Alibaba Cloud Account: Backup alert notifications for the backup vault are sent to the Alibaba Cloud account by email by default.
Custom: Select the contacts or contact groups to receive backup alerts for this vault.
