Cloud Data Transfer (CDT) supports the pay-as-you-go billing method. This topic describes the data transfer types, billing rules, and billing cycles supported by CDT.
CDT is an out-of-the-box service that separates resource use and management from resource billing. You are not charged for activating CDT. Alibaba Cloud products provide resource management features, and CDT manages the bills of data transfers of Alibaba Cloud products in a centralized manner.
After you activate CDT and enable CDT billing for Alibaba Cloud products, CDT automatically bills the data transfers incurred by all existing and new pay-by-data-transfer instances. If new Alibaba Cloud products are supported by CDT, CDT automatically bills the data transfers of the pay-by-data-transfer instances of the products. You can go to the CDT console to view the products that are supported by CDT.
If your ECS instance is in a virtual private cloud (VPC), you can be billed by CDT. If your ECS instance is in a classic network type, you cannot be billed by CDT, you can Migrate ECS instances from the classic network to a VPC to be billed by CDT.
Billing method
CDT supports the pay-as-you-go billing method and has the following features:
You can use CDT to aggregate and bill the Internet data transfers of multiple Alibaba Cloud services in each region that provide access to the Internet based on tiered pricing.
You can use CDT to bill the cross-region data transfers incurred by products that provide cross-region access based on the pay-by-data-transfer metering method. Tiered pricing is not supported.
CDT only bills Alibaba Cloud products. If you want to upgrade an instance, downgrade an instance, or change the billing method of an Alibaba Cloud product, you must perform the corresponding operations in the console of the corresponding Alibaba Cloud product.
The following table describes products that provide access to the Internet, products that provide cross-region access, and their billing rules.

Billing rules for data transfers
Billing rules for data transfers in CDT are the same as the original billing rules of Alibaba Cloud products, including pay-by-dominant-data-transfer and pay-by-outbound-data-transfer.
Billing method | Billing rule | Description | Supported service |
Pay-as-you-go | Pay-by-dominant-data-transfer | In a billing cycle, the direction in which a greater amount of data is transferred is the dominant direction. You are charged for data transfers in the dominant direction. |
|
Pay-by-outbound-data-transfer | In a billing cycle, you are charged for the outbound data transfers of an instance. |
|
Billing cycle
Bills are generated in CDT on an hourly basis.
Billing cycle | Fee deduction time and bill generation time | Billable item |
Hourly | By default, CDT generates the bills of data transfers within a maximum of 6 hours. For example, at 19:00, you can view bills that are generated before 13:00. | Pay-by-dominant-data-transfer Pay-by-outbound-data-transfer |
