Broadcast Live is an integrated hybrid solution using Alibaba Cloud services and the 3rd party technologies. With this solution, you are able to easily establish a highly available global platform to manage a broadcast event for your audience with great experience on mobiles, PCs, TVs, and other smart devices, without the need to install, configure, and manage costly infrastructure. What's more, this solution is easily redeployed at any Alibaba Cloud regions, and live broadcasts are able to be deployed and operated globally in minutes rather than weeks or months. The solution is also able to scale and be running concurrently many times in the same location, not bound by infrastructure constraints.

How It Works
Your Challenge
The very first steps involved in a live stream is to transform the content into a digital form, after content is encoded it is then required to get the content into the cloud in a reliable and secure method. For some this will need to be done twice over different networks to ensure reliability of ingest, this solution will attempt to address this.

To encode the video there are many providers of hardware or software platform that can run on-premises to encode the video, Alibaba Cloud's media team is able to support our customers to find the best one for their need. Alternatively, Alibaba Cloud's Video Capture SDK can be used directly on a web application or mobile device. ApsaraVideo Live is an end-to-end service that integrates several standalone services to stream, transcode, distribute, and play back your media content. ApsaraVideo Live supports the recording of live video, transcoding on the cloud and storage all in real time. It also supports on-demand playback and transition of live videos to on-demand video.

ApsaraVideo Live enables edge ingest by default, which allows Alibaba Cloud CDN node locations to be used to retrieve the stream. The optimal node is defined for each push so the most efficient upstream network connection issued, to reduce issues caused by network latencies.

This service also supports SRT (Secure Reliable Transport), this open source video transport protocol enables the delivery of high-quality and secure, low-latency video across the public Internet. SRT optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks with secure streams and easy firewall traversal, bringing the best quality live video over the worst networks. It accounts for packet loss, jitter, and fluctuating bandwidth, maintaining the integrity and quality of your video.

Your Challenge
In order to reach the widest audience on a myriad of devices on multiple networks it is important to process the content into different formats and bitrates. Other processes are needed to enable other workflows, for example encrypting the content and stream from those not authorized to view the content.
Live streaming can also by definition by high risk, with the possibility that a video/audio stream inadvertently including content not compliant with broadcast regulations; nudity, swearing etc. This is often done by adding a delay which can manually be used by a ‘director’ to mitigate the content being served by enacting ‘The Dump Button’ which removes few seconds of offending content.

ApsaraVideo Live is able to ingest live streams from around the world and transcode into the most commonly used video distribution formats. This is able to be established in pre-defined templates or entirely in the API, to allow automation in the service or from other systems.

ApsaraVideo Live also has integrated AI services that allows ‘illicit content’, to be detected and removed/changed. This automation allows all content, (not just the streams that are manually monitored) to have content compliance to be carried out in real-time. This is hugely important solution for content platforms that have many 1000’s of concurrent streams, where it is impossible to have manual validation for all streams. When detected the adjustment of the content can be defined to mitigate inappropriate content being seen by sensitive audiences.

Media Origination Service allows a single video asset to be packaged on the fly to a wide range of formats, to enable a video stream to play on a broad range of video playback devices, including web players, smart phones, game consoles, tablets, and connected TVs. This reduces transcode costs and dynamic integration of other workflow components; Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies to protect the assets from unauthorized access. Media Origin services also enables Server-Side Advertisement Insertion (SSAI) to restrict ad blocking technologies from reducing revenues and Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) to better focus advertisements to the audience.
