HOY TV is a Hong Kong local broadcasting company that focuses on creating TV programmes centered around the lives and experiences of Hong Kong people. HOY makes shows to address a wide range of trending topics around Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, including food, travel, sports, lifestyle, and shopping.
In addition to the traditional over-the-air broadcasting, HOY TV has its own OTT platform, and has established a vast TV network to cover railway carriages and large outdoor screens in various locations, providing the 7 million people of Hong Kong with the latest news, entertainment and information across all platforms.
Challenges
HOY TV wanted to launch a new mobile application to handle the exclusive broadcasting of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou but there were two main challenges:
Stability and scalability of the mobile platform to manage the large influx of viewers during a live broadcast of the 19th Asian Games
Efficient, real-time data management and analysis for the HOY ecosystem. The goal was to turn the data into valuable insights and segment audiences based on their interests

Architecture
Alibaba Cloud’s comprehensive cloud solutions made it a practical choice for the developers, who only had to focus on the core program foundation. With a high-speed network powered by Alibaba Cloud Content Delivery Network (CDN) and an effective, secure Object Service Storage (OSS) for data management, HOY TV was able to support their mobile app and ensure optimal content performance.
They also leveraged Elastic Compute Service (ECS) and Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK) to build scalable, agile, and secure high-performance virtual servers, that managed and executed containerized applications for the mobile app and OTT platform.
Key Results
Alibaba Cloud collaborated with HOY TV, significantly boosting its reach and performance.
The HOY mobile app has over 400,000 app downloads and 200,000 active monthly users since its launch in 2023.
Supported the broadcast of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games for over 60,000 concurrent live viewers.
Excellent user experience with state-of-the-art features such as bookmarks for favorite shows and live EPG access from the mobile app.
Looking Forward
HOY TV wants to develop and expand their OTT platform further and they believe OTT platforms that actively interact with the audience are the future. Together with Alibaba Cloud, HOY TV will add new features such as e-coupons, e-commerce stores, and AI-powered recommendations to the app.
