At the 2021 Trusted Cloud Summit, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) announced the results of the Trusted Cloud Assessment. Alibaba’s Cloud-Native won three awards in Trusted Cloud best practices. It also was one of the first batches to pass a series of advanced-level certifications in professional competency assessment.
Trusted Cloud Assessment is a sub-brand of the CAICT. It is currently the only authoritative certification system for cloud services in China. The assessment results are recognized as the most authoritative and can best reflect the degree of market recognition in the industry. Chaos Engineering has been practiced in Alibaba for many years, comprehensively covering Alibaba's core businesses. It is evolving along with Alibaba's system architecture from microservices to containerizing and cloud-native. ChaosBlade is an open-source Chaos Engineering project of Alibaba that has become a CNCF Sandbox project. Chaos is a commercialized fault drill platform that outputs Alibaba's internal practical experience as products. It provides rich experimental scenarios, an expert experience base, and domain-specific solutions to meet users' requirements for troubleshooting.
Under flexible process scheduling and open integration capabilities, Chaos provides monitoring and reporting to realize the closed-loop implementation of Chaos Engineering. The platform controls the risk of fault drills through privilege management and protection rehearsal to help enterprises improve system stability and business continuity during cloud migration, cloud ready, and cloud-native procedures.
Enterprise Distributed Application Service (EDAS) has accumulated technical practice in the PaaS layer for more than ten years. It fully embraces open-source and supports microservices technology systems, such as Spring Cloud Dubbo. It also supports the K8s container technology system. It integrates application release management, microservice governance, container management, observability, namespace, sub-accounts, and other enterprise-level features to create an all-in-one PaaS management platform.
Since its commercialization in 2016, it has served tens of thousands of customers, such as China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, China Post, Ford Motor, Chanjet, Hai Di Lao, and Renren Video. It helps drive enterprises' digital transformation and improves the research and development, management and maintenance efficiency, and business availability of enterprises.
Managed edge Kubernetes clusters support features, such as node autonomy, processing units, network traffic management, and native APIs, for the management and maintenance of resources at the edge side. This provides a native and centralized method for application lifecycle management and resource scheduling in edge computing scenarios. Shentong Express using Alibaba Cloud edge containers to grow its business in the logistics industry is a typical case. Serverless is an upgrade to cloud-native. It is a next-generation universal computing platform that provides more flexible and economical computing capabilities. It has served Alibaba (Ant Group, Fliggy, Taobao, Tmall, Xianyu, Alipay, etc.) and tens of thousands of external clients, such as Guangdong 115 Technology, Unilever, Sina microblog, and Shimo Documents.
Alibaba Cloud Function Compute (FC) has integrated 30 cloud products, creating a comprehensive serverless ecosystem. It supports reserved instances and multiple concurrences of a single instance. It also has product capabilities, such as container images, high-performance instances, tracing analysis, and asynchronous configuration. A single cluster can reach the scale of millions of function instances and scale in 100 milliseconds. It is suitable for sudden data traffic peak scenarios, such as flash sales and big promotions, interacting during livestreaming, customized audio and video transcoding, web services, mobile apps, and data processing.
In 2021, Alibaba Cloud was named a Leader in the Forrester FaaS Quadrant. Alibaba Cloud is the only cloud service provider from China on the list, leading the world in Function Compute product capabilities and strategic vision. In 2020, CAICT released the Cloud Native User Survey Report, where Alibaba Cloud Serverless ranked first in terms of market share in China. Alibaba Cloud Serverless App Engine (SAE) is a next-generation of the all-in-one application hosting platform that integrates serverless technology and the microservices model perfectly. SAE can move Spring Cloud, Dubbo, and HSF applications to the cloud without transformation. The platform also provides monitoring and diagnostics, automatic image building, Java comprehensive process acceleration, multiple release policies, second-level elasticity, and other capabilities. SAE also supports Jenkins, Apsara, and DevOps plug-ins and other deployment applications and can deploy applications in any language through Docker images.
Zero threshold + zero transformation + zero container foundation enables enterprises to enjoy the technical bonus brought by Serverless + K8s + microservices instantly. It is suitable for low-threshold microservice model transformation and outburst data traffic peak scenarios, such as flash sales and big promotion events, and other cases, such as rapid cloud migration and station relocation. It has served enterprises, including Timing App, Nangua movie, Baifu Travel, iQIYI Sports, and Helian Health.
Alibaba Cloud Serverless Kubernetes (ASK) is a serverless Kubernetes container service (Serverless K8s) launched by Alibaba Cloud. It has comprehensive Kubernetes compatibility. It improves the agility and elasticity of container application deployment and reduces customers' computing costs significantly by fully hosting Kubernetes services. In addition, it allows customers to focus on business applications rather than basic infrastructure management. Alibaba Cloud Container Service for Kubernetes is one of the only products in China that has been listed in the Gartner Public Cloud Container Report for three consecutive years. Serverless containers are regarded as one of the main differences in the container service platform of cloud service providers in the Gartner 2021 Public Cloud Container Service Market assessment report.
Each Pod in an ASK cluster runs in a secure and isolated container runtime built on an Elastic Container Instance (ECI). The underlying compute resources of each elastic container instance are isolated by lightweight virtual sandboxes. Elastic container instances do not affect each other. Based on the deeply optimized Serverless container architecture of Alibaba Cloud, ASK clusters can obtain great elasticity easily without being limited by the node computing capacity of the clusters. Currently, ASK can launch 1,000 running pods per minute. A single cluster supports 20K Pods easily.
Alibaba Cloud Service Mesh (ASM) is an infrastructure for the unified management of a variety of heterogeneous services. As a hosting platform, it manages microservices data traffic and is compatible with Istio. It simplifies service administration in all aspects through traffic shaping, mesh monitoring, and inter-service communication security. Additionally, it provides unified management of services running on heterogeneous computing infrastructures. It is suitable for Kubernetes clusters, serverless Kubernetes clusters, ECS instances, and self-built clusters.
Let’s look at Sunmi Technology as an example. ASM allows the Sunmi Industry Research Team to enjoy the value brought by Service Mesh. ASM shortens the service mesh technology landing cycle by 75% (from months to weeks), improves the update iteration efficiency by 70%, reduces troubleshooting costs by 80%, and reduces the cost of control plane resources by 100%. It helps enterprises, including Huatai Securities, Bixin Technology, and Qinbaobao Company, build digital resilience in the cloud-native age.
Enterprises can measure the fault tolerance of microservices, estimate the red line of system fault tolerance, and evaluate the fault tolerance of the system using the Fault Drill Platform for Chaos Engineering. In addition, the platform can verify whether the container orchestration configuration is reasonable and test whether the PaaS layer is stable. It can verify the timeliness of alerts and improve the accuracy and effectiveness of alerts. You can inject faults into the system randomly to evaluate the related personnel’s ability to handle emergencies. This can verify whether the fault reporting and handling procedures are reasonable. By doing so, you can improve your team’s ability to locate and solve problems through practice. You can find problems like system instability in advance by injecting faults.
