Elastic Compute Service (ECS) is a cloud service used to create and manage virtual machines in Alibaba Cloud. This cloud service is available in all the regions and zones of Alibaba Cloud. The cost of usage differs with the type of instances and the region in which the instances are created. The object storage service (OSS) buckets can also be mounted with these instances. In this blog we walkthrough the unique parameters which gives ECS a better picture when anyone considers to get IaaS product to have virtual machines.

Billing
Apart from Pay As You Go (PAYG), Alibaba Cloud provides a subscription mode for billing. This billing can be done for monthly and yearly basis and the cost is lesser than PAYG. Reserved instances are also available to customers who are ready to commit a long term usage of the instances and they receive special prices for the usage.

Service Availability
The availability of ECS instances which are from the same zone is 99.975% and those from different zones is 99.995%. This level of availability is the highest for a cloud virtual machine available currently.

Heterogenous Instances and AI
ECS provides instances with GPU, FPGA and super computing capabilities. GPU virtualization is available with Alibaba Cloud ECS. Container GPU (cGPU) on Alibaba Cloud Kubernetes (ACK) is a GPU sharing service based on KVM. AI Accelerator (AIACC) is available and it improves AI training performance by 2-14 times and testing performance by 2-6 times. The GPUs used for AI capabilities can be stacked as the way it needs to be customized. Elastic AI solution is available to decouple CPU and GPU resources as a cost effective way to build AI capability.

Persistent Memory
Alibaba Cloud RE6p instance provides a persistent memory-optimized solution by using non-volatile memory DPCMM (Intel Optane), which is able to perform as close as DRAM together with a lower cost than close to SSD. It able to achieve ultra-low read/write latency of 400ns and data can be stored persistently.

Storage Enhanced Instance
G6se is the instance family with enhanced storage performance. It is able to deliver a sequential read/write performance of up to 32 Gbit/s per instance, up to 900K IOPS, and a maximum throughput of 4GB/s.

Security Enhanced Instances
ECS instances powered with Software Guard Extensions (SGX) and encrypted memory up to 256 GB to protect the confidentiality and integrity of essential code and data from malware attacks. This feature will be available in the 7th gen security-enhanced instance family. TMP, virtual enclave are supported by g7t instance. This security enhanced Alibaba cloud ECS instance minimizes the attack interface to verify the system from boot to application.
Server Migration
Server Migration Center is available to migrate servers from servers in data centers, virtual machines, cloud hosts on other cloud platforms, and servers of other types to Alibaba Cloud.
After Sales Support
Six tickets per quarter is provided against 3 tickets earlier and the response time of queries is reduced to 18 hours.
