This Week: What's New On Alibaba Cloud?

Welcome back! This week we take a (very short) look at what's new on Alibaba Cloud.

New, Fourth Generation "Shen Long" (X-Dragon) Hardware (ECS)

Three international regions have seen the deployment of new, higher-performance X-Dragon server hardware. Namely:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Singapore
  3. Indonesia

Users in these regions can now make use of ECS instances equipped with elastic RDMA acceleration. This new X-Dragon hardware improves network throughput, disk I/O, and reduces network latency as well.

Elastic Desktop Service Goes Live

The EDS (Elastic Desktop Service) has started its International rollout, and is now available in:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Japan
  3. Singapore
  4. Australia

Learn more about EDS here.

Tablestore Adds Kafka Support

Tablestore has added support for Kafka, meaning data can be pushed from Kafka directly into Tablestore. Support is live in the following regions:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Japan
  3. Singapore
  4. Australia
  5. Germany
  6. UAE
  7. US East
  8. US West
  9. Malaysia
  10. India
  11. Indonesia
  12. UK

HBR (Hybrid Backup & Recovery) Adds Support For KMS Encryption

The HBR service now supports encrypting data using encryption keys you create via KMS.

This improves HBR's ability to meet strict compliance requirements in industries where encryption is a must.

VPN Gateway Live In The Philippines

As one of Alibaba Cloud's newest regions, the Philippines is still waiting for some products to come online. Luckily, the VPN Gateway service is no longer one of those products: it's live already!

Subscription Support Added To ALB (Application Load Balancer)

Alibaba's new Layer-7 load balancing service, ALB, now supports subscription plans. Previously only available as Pay-As-You-Go, this changes the economics of running an ALB in the long term. Cost savings are always a good thing!

Note that support for subscription isn't available in all International regions yet. Notably, Dubai (UAE), US West, Malaysia, the UK, and the Philippines will have to wait for this one.

Improvements To AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL

In addition to a new higher performance kernel and some bug fixes, AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL has also added support for Diagnostics and Optimization, a feature available already for some other databases systems like ApsaraDB for RDS. This will help users write better, more optimized SQL code. Efficiency for the win!

ApsaraDB for MongoDB Goes Live In The Philippines

The heading says it all! Managed MongoDB has come to Manila.

ACK Clusters Add New Backup Feature

It's now possible to back up your ACK clusters using the new backup feature in the ACK console (available in public preview). This feature is live now in all regions except Dubai (UAE).

SMS Service Goes Live In Indonesia

Indonesia now supports Alibaba Cloud's SMS messaging service. Nice!

RAM Roles Add New RD (Resource Directory) Features

Ok, this sounds really boring but it's actually awesome, and you should care about this if you're operating a multi-account environment.t

With this feature, you can now set the trust entity in a RAM Role's Trust Policy to be an entire RD tree or part of an RD tree. This allows the account(s) within that tree (or part of the tree) to make use of the role.

This saves you from:

  1. Writing multiple roles to do the same job
  2. Writing complicated trust policies involving multiple Alibaba Cloud account IDs

This feature is now live in all regions (it's a global feature).

Well, that's all for this week!. See you next time. ^_^
